Wet Spotlight: Kurt Warner
Super Bowl XLIII was a game for the record books! The Pittsburgh Steelers won the outstanding title game, with this win being their sixth Super Bowl victory and with coach, Mike Tomlin, being the second African American coach to lead an NFL team to Super Bowl triumph.
Though his team, the Arizona Cardinals, did not gain victory of the Super Bowl game, Kurlis "Kurt" Warner was awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his philanthropic work.
Kurt Warner has answered the call of service, as many national athletes do to expose their roles as responsible community leaders. Warner has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to aid the foundations goal of building homes for families in need. His efforts also included raising more than $650K to aid in housing developments for those affected by drastic flooding in the Midwest. In the same housing effort, Warner has made a personal contribution of $10K, and his foundation, First Things First Foundation, matched this monetary amount in a generous donation. In support of Make-A-Wish families and other charitable organizations, the First Things First Foundation raised more than $1.5M.
The Walter Payton Award is the only one in the NFL which commends a player's sportsmanship as well as, shine a light on their off-the-field service to the community. It could not have gone to a better man!
